Description
These five download-and-print readers are suitable for students in Year 1, or slightly older catch-up learners. The purchaser may print up to five copies of each book (i.e. 40c per print ex GST). A printable quiz for each book is included, or use the Wordwall quiz online.
The books can be used with the Spelfabet Level 2 and 3 teaching sequence, Workbooks, word-building sequences and/or the playing cards here, here and here.
The sounds and spellings introduced in the Set 1 books are c as in cent, g as in gem, le as in little, o as in love and a as in ball. They are found in many high frequency words, so if they are introduced early, many of the target words don’t first have to be learned as ‘tricky’ words. Apart from the target words and some ‘tricky’ words, the Set 1 stories include only words that can be decoded with Initial Code knowledge. These books can therefore be used in tandem with readers from other series to introduce these sounds and spellings at any point in teaching the Extended Code.
Nancy Visits the City (330 words)
- c as in cent
- Nancy wants to go on a trip to the city, but her dad is too busy to take her, so she goes by herself on the bus.
Gerald, Gemma, and Jess (250 words)
- g as in gem
- Gerald and Gemma wish they were still little like Jess, but they decide that it can be fun to plan what they will be when they grow up.
Cuddle in a Puddle (313 words)
- le as final syllable
- Lots of little questions in rhyming verse.
The Monkeys’ Wedding (469 words)
- o as in love
- In some African countries, and in the Caribbean, people say that it’s a monkeys’ wedding when the sun is shining and it’s raining at the same time.
Up the Wall (441 words)
- a as in wall
- Jack asks to go to the climbing wall in the mall, but he finds that going up is easier than getting down.
